[YS TV] Scott Mark of Medtronic, World's Largest Medical Technology Company
Founded in the US in 1949 as a medical equipment repair shop, Medtronic has grown to become the world’s largest independent medical technology company. In 1960, they entered the med-tech manufacturing space with their compact, battery-powered pacemaker, and have since developed technologies that are being used every day to treat more than 30 chronic diseases affecting various parts of the body.
Today, Medtronic employs nearly 38,000 people worldwide and offers a wide range of solutions including radio frequency therapies, mechanical devices, drug and biologic delivery devices, and diagnostic tools to help chronic disease patients resume healthy and active lifestyles.
At the Health 2.0 conference in Bangalore, we connected with Scott Mark, Senior Innovation Program Manager of Medtronic. “We produce therapies that help people address the burden of chronic disease,” Scott said during the interview. “Over 60% of deaths come from chronic disease, and 75% of the costs of healthcare occur with chronic disease, so we feel that’s the place to have the biggest impact in healthcare.”
Scott went on to explain how Medtronic plans to engage with the Indian market and work with innovators in the Indian startup community. He noted, “We’re really interested to learn from the startup community what the best way is to address access to healthcare and awareness of chronic disease here in India… We’re really excited to see some of the innovation happening in the startup community around addressing those challenges.”
