India’s largest online retailer Flipkart has launched voice search feature on its website. The feature enables users’ to search Flipkart's’ catalogue by voice recognition mechanism. For instance, we have tried to search mobile phones and books through the new service and it works well.
Currently, the voice search feature is not available for mobile phones, however we believe that it will get extended for mobile phones soon.
Speaking to YourStory about voice search feature Saranagati Chatterjee, VP - Products, Flipkart, said “The voice search feature on Flipkart.com is another step towards enhancing the user experience. Our goal is to strengthen and improve the overall search capabilities by providing users with multiple options - be it text or voice. This feature will be even more useful on mobile devices.”
The current version of voice search will also help us gather a lot of data in terms of usage, user's preference and its overall accuracy - which in turn will be used to make enhancements to improve the overall experience.
By launching such feature Flipkart tries to optimize the search experience for its users, however we are not sure about adoption of voice search by online shoppers. Over the past year and so online retailers have been launching features to assist avoid measurement and size issues. Earlier in April this year Myntra acquired San Francisco based Fitquette , a technology solution which is a virtual fitting room.
