[Fabulous Startup Workplaces] CommonFloor, giving dreams and passion a common platform
"We started out from where we lived. We'd work out of Lalit's place, or Vikas' place or my place and just juggle around. As we grew, we started to rent out offices in Bangalore, and today we have offices in 18 cities in India," remarks Sumit Jain, Co-founder and CEO, CommonFloor.com, as he gives us a tour of the two-floor office nestled between small shops and eateries in Domlur, Bangalore.
The trio of Sumit Jain, Lalit Mangal and Vikas Malpani remain rooted to their humble beginnings from the time they started out in 2008. "We were just 20 people for a long time, and now we are more than 600 people. When we were a 20-people team we made sure that we spent a lot of time building a foundation and not to grow just for the sake of growing," says Sumit.
As you enter their office, the predominant use of the orange color, consistent with their logo, greets you. One cannot miss out the energy and passion evident in the hustle and bustle inside the office.

"I love challenges. And trust me, at CommonFloor there are lots of them. No two days are the same or mundane and this is what ensures that I turn up at office every day," says an employee.
CommonFloor wants to map the journey of a property-seeker online, from the time they seek to buy a property, to when they become property owner/resident, to ensuring that the work of property managers/association is made easier.
The team is quite young with an average age of 29 years and the founders have ensured that they hire for attitude more than aptitude. The culture at CommonFloor is to look out for each other - "If I am not able to do it, is there someone else in my team who can do it?"
The HR team promotes flexi-timings and work-from-home options, and the recently introduced concept of 'extended weekends' has gone down really well with the employees.
CommonFloor has grown by leaps and bounds in the last two years. Talking about this, Vikas Malpani, Co-founder and Head, CommonFloor Groups, says, "The last two years have seen a crazy growth. It has been very exciting as well as demanding."
