Remind’em app - because setting your own reminders is too mainstream
It was in the summer of 2014 at Amazon, Hyderabad, that three close friends arrived at an idea of building a mobile application that can transform the way in which people are used to setting reminders.
It took off when these spirited lads, Varun Jakhoria, Jatin Bajaj and Vivek Bhargav came together and conceived the idea of developing their first Android application Remind'em. Varun is an industry professional with over four years of experience under his belt, while Jatin and Vivek are final year undergrads at IIT Guwahati. While all three come from varying areas of specializations, they have the ability to think out of the box.
Interestingly, what motivated them to build this particular product was something rather mundane -- Vivek's sluggish attitude of never reaching the foosball table on time and his phone being almost always out of reach. Yet, it is out of stuff considered commonplace that radical ideas are born. That’s the thing about innovation. It does not come with prescribed templates, guidelines, mechanisms, or even a fixed criterion for success. Though this may be somewhat unnerving for people who are afraid to take the road less travelled, it is the very attribute that drives people like the developers of Remind’em to literally eat, sleep and breathe their dream project.
What followed thereafter is not so difficult to predict. This is a completely bootstrapped project. The outcome is a revolutionary app that is just over a week into the market but already all set to take the app world by storm.
It’s a no-brainer that for anything you wish to remember, you can always open your phone and set a reminder for the same. But wait? How often do you actually stop to do that? Worse still, what about those times when it is someone else who needs to remind you of something crucial? How many times in your jam-packed schedule have you juggled your last minute errands, only to discover that the most important thing that needed reminding totally skipped your mind? And then you have either your friend cribbing or your wife complaining about your short-term memory loss!
But all that is now set to change, because this trio understood that some things in life are just too important to forget! And even when they are not, why risk it!
That’s precisely why the developers of Remind’em were so driven to put together an elegant yet powerful app for their users -- all in such a manner that the act of reminding others could be made easier and more effective than one could’ve ever thought possible!
Presenting Remind’em
An Android application, Remind’em gives you unmatched ability to set reminders on others’ phones and alert them exactly when it’s required, exactly where it’s required!
No more frustration of last minute calling, phone being out of range or keeping mental notes to leave someone a text, only to forget all about it minutes later. Now simply let others care when they have to remind you. And what’s best? This app makes the task completely effortless!
Remind’em offers three distinct features. The first in the triad are time-based reminders. These let the user compose a reminder, set to it a date, time and description, and add multiple alerts to it (for times when it’s urgent and people are lazy). That’s somewhat basic, you’d imagine. Not really, because here’s the twist! Once you have set the reminder, you can then send it across to a friend. This in turn will automatically set an alarm on your friend’s phone for that specific time, without them having to even lift a finger. So for instance, if you wish to wake someone up, you don’t have to stay up yourself anymore. Just set up a reminder for them and they’ll get an alarm on their phone. Easy as that!
The next capability the app offers is one of assigning location-based reminders. They truly come in handy when you are unsure about the time but definite regarding a certain location for an event or activity that’s coming up. These can be put to several different innovative uses depending on one’s requirement. How about this? You plant a reminder at a location on the map and send it to your desired friend. This ticks off an alarm in your friend’s phone as he approaches the vicinity of the said location. Now the next time you want to let your husband know what to buy once he leaves from his office, you need only to place a location based reminder on your phone for his office. And you are all set! He will come to know accordingly as he’s leaving from work.
And last but in no way least, Remind’em brings to you the one-of-its-kind feature of subscription reminders. The developers are still working on building this aspect further and currently have a list of topics like the Cricket World Cup 2015, Bollywood movie releases, Drupal Hyderabad, IIT Guwahati Institute’s schedule etc. for starters. This does not define the list, as they are regularly bringing in additional topics to further their catalog. The listings are visible to everyone and free to subscribe. On subscribing to the topic of their choice, one receives regular reminders regarding the buzz that’s going on with that specific content at any given time.
Remind’em is an exchange of favors between people; hence they won’t charge you anything, ever! No ads, no interruptions, whatsoever. Just seamless service and uncomplicated smart reminders! At this moment, they are a work in progress as they are already developing the application for both iOS and windows platforms and these will be available on the respective stores soon.
Remind'em plans to monetize the service by setting reminders and optimising the scheduled services of educational institutions, healthcare facilities, e-commerce and financial sectors. They have started partnering with organizations like IITG, Drupal, BITS Pilani with other collaborations on the way soon. Though the service will be free for the users, the partnered organizations will pay which ensures a sustainable cash flow for Remind'em.
One-of-a-kind app
Remind’em currently is a one of a kind app in this segment making it a novelty. Other apps such as Life Reminder, To-do reminder etc. are different in the sense that they let the user set a reminder for themselves and not others. Also, location reminders are unique as well, so Google Keep lets you set a location and reminds you when you are around. Remind’em sets a location for someone else and gives him/her the reminder when he/she reaches the place.
