The factories of Sanand, near Ahmedabad, are faced with a unique problem – handling ‘crorepati’ labourers. There has been a windfall of Rs 2,000 crore for land owners in and around Sanand, where the Gujarat government acquired over 4,000 hectares of land over the last seven years, turning many of these residents into ‘crorepatis’. With huge amounts of money at their disposal, most beneficiaries went on a buying spree. After buying cars, gadgets and everything else that money could possibly buy, these residents realized that an empty mind is a devil’s workshop; and soon resumed work.

Jagatsinh Vaghela, one such beneficiary, in an interview with the Times of India said, “After I received money, I quit my job to watch Cricket World Cup 2011. India won the cup and the tournament was over. I was left with a lot of money and no work. A man without work is nothing less than a live bomb.” Jagatsinh soon resumed his job as a pump manager in the same firm from where he had resigned, and is currently earning a salary of Rs 18,000 per month.

Interestingly, almost half of the labourers employed at the Raviraj Foils Ltd in Sanand have more than Rs 1 crore in their bank accounts. These people work as machine operators, floor supervisors, security personnel and even peons. Their salaries range from Rs 9,000 to Rs 20,000 per month. With companies like Tata (Nano), Hitachi, Ford, and PSA Peugeot Citroën establishing industries in Sanand over the last few years, the number of bank branches in the town has gone from 2 to 56, currently handling deposits worth Rs 3,000 crore. Sanand might as well be the fastest growing economic pocket in India.
