A young professor at one of the world’s finest universities teamed up with a research graduate to take up a challenge from Tim Berners Lee - the inventor of WWW - to solve the issue of internet traffic congestion. They developed the mathematical algorithms necessary to intelligently route and replicate content over a large network of distributed servers, technology that would ultimately solve what was becoming a frustrating problem for Internet users. They later began exploring the possible commercial use of their technology, and entered an entrepreneurship competition with a prize worth $50,000. Their business plan was selected as one of six finalists from among 100 entries. This distinction indicated that internet content delivery had a serious market potential. They founded a company in 1998, which was among the most-watched startups of the early 2000s. Today, the same company is responsible for serving between 15 to 30 percent of all web traffic.
This is the story of Dr. Tom Leighton, the present CEO of Akamai Technologies. One of the world's eminent authorities on algorithms for network applications, Dr. Leighton has been a professor of repute at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he taught Applied Mathematics. While he co-founded Akamai, he didn’t become a CEO right away. For 14 years, he was Akamai’s Chief Scientist before taking on the CEO’s role in 2013.
Dr. Leighton is Akamai's technology visionary and leads the senior management team in setting the company's strategic direction, while engaging directly with customers and partners from around the globe. He is also a member of the Board of Directors.
He and his company have played a key role in enabling us to use the internet as we know it today– from live-streaming the most happening moments of the day, watching a high-definition movie, or downloading a favourite song in a matter of few blinks.
