How to give yourself a pep talk before a meeting
Anxious? Nervous? Demotivated thinking about the last attempt that didn’t go too well? A pep talk could be your saviour! Whether you are readying yourself for a startup interview, board meeting in an MNC, or for investor’s pitch, spending just five minutes on “self-talk” can make you feel drastically better, and that’s exactly what you need in order to come across as a confident, energetic, and responsible presenter at any meeting.

Indeed, the idea of telling yourself the stories of your achievements and everything that you are capable of is not nonsense at all, and studies have suggested that this five-minute conversation in front of a mirror can actually have a positive impact when done right. The advantages of pep talks are not unknown; in fact, a recent study on the impact of pep talks on athletes’ performance showed how, after completing the practice and baselines tests, these athletes were able to beat their previous performance and that of their “opponents”. If this rings a bell, here are five ways that you can inspire yourself to perform better at the next meeting.
Start with a simple, but effective script
“I’m excited,” “I have good presentation skills,” “I know I’m going to be great” — say these things in front of a mirror and see how this quick exercise will engender the confident personality in you. The idea is to use a script that is self-motivating. If you are not one for creativity, saying just a line or a phrase that puts you in a good light can have a profound impact on your mood. Self-talk focused on specific goals works better in this scenario. Try these:
- I’m awesome
- I’m proud of myself and my achievements
- One of my strengths is to conquer my fears
- I am thankful for this opportunity and I will make the best use of it
- I believe in my abilities
- I have and I will triumph
Maintain a journal
When you are in need of a pep talk, this is a clear sign that your mind is in a state of negativity. In such a case, it can be difficult for anyone to see the bright side of the situation. Instead of being worried about the consequences of the meeting, it is best to focus on how you can make it better. Make a list of your talents, passions, interests, and strengths. Maintain a journal of your thoughts and feelings. Make sure that you pen down everything that’s making you anxious about the meeting. For instance, if it is the fear of rejection, practise affirmative statements such as, “I’m conquering the fear and I’m going to rock the presentation.” Strong, positive self-talk brings to life a person’s capabilities, strengths, talents, and skills.
Give yourself a high-five
Go on, high-five yourself! It’s the gesture that counts, so do whatever you’re comfortable with, be it high-fiving your reflection or literally giving yourself a pat on the back. You may not be used to acknowledging your achievements with physical gestures, but this small gesture of self-appreciation is just going to make you feel good about yourself. Bonus tip: say something along the lines of “Yes, you can do it,” “Go for it, champ,” or “It’s just a meeting, man; break a leg.” Feeling the energy already?
Treat yourself — literally
Eat sugar! Treat yourself to anything that you love to eat. It could be a slice of pizza, red velvet cake, fruit of your choice, or even a sweetened milkshake. Whatever makes you happy and especially something that you have been avoiding due to weight issues or other health concerns. A bit of your favourite food can make all the difference in managing your mood right before the meeting. While you are binge eating, be sure to tell yourself how you deserve this exotic treat and how it is going to make you look cheerful. After all, entering a room with a happy face is half the battle won.
Meetings are important — a good one can prove to be a breakthrough in anyone’s life. Feeling anxiety and restlessness is normal, but giving negative feelings the power to flourish can take away the only opportunity you have. Be sure to give yourself a motivating pep talk before you enter the meeting room. Say it aloud! Let it out and the world will be your oyster.
