How Twitter stayed up all night celebrating and speculating about India's future

How Twitter stayed up all night celebrating and speculating about India's future

Wednesday November 09, 2016 , 3 min Read

Last night, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes in what people are already calling a historic move. Social media was accordingly filled with outbursts of joy, celebrating the end of an era of black money and corruption that held our economy back.

In his 40-minute nationwide TV address first in Hindi and later in English, Modi announced,

Starting midnight, Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes “will not be legal tender from midnight tonight” and will be “just worthless pieces of paper.”

As expected, social media went berserk overnight. While the optimists were rejoicing, the skeptics were reading and seeking clarity. Some wondered what can be done with the existing Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, while others were worried about how the common man will be affected.
