PhotoSparks is a weekly feature from YourStory, with photographs that celebrate the spirit of creativity and innovation. In this photo essay, we showcase the stunning installations of light and art at ‘I Light Marina Bay,’ Singapore’s annual Light Art Festival!

In the earlier 125 posts, we brought you a wide range of creative photographs from an art fair, world music festival, painting fair, telecom expo, art museum, mobile showcase, math museum, social hackathon, bookstore, co-working space, sensorium, international design week, flower show, outdoor ads, startup roadshow, computer museum, startup T-shirts, business cards, art therapy, startup festival, Diwali rangoli, Vesak, jazz festival, modern art gallery, ecopreneurs, painter-poets, health activists, eNGOs and digital innovators.

My travels this month took me to Singapore for the annual Singapore Design Week and the ‘I Light Marina Bay’ festival of lights and art. The festival explores the relationship between light, nature and the city, and the theme this fifth year was sustainable light art, according to festival curator Randy Chan. Many of the installations were made from everyday objects like umbrellas and even used water bottles; the Ocean Pavilion featured 25,000 empty Evian water bottles.

The combination of light and art can be spectacular, and helps in fostering creativity, community building, urban identity and tourism. The festival also included the Art-Zoo, an interactive inflatable art park with larger-than-life animals and plants, right next to the Esplanade theatres.

The Marina Bay area in Singapore has some of the most stunning skylines, and the event also featured colourful light images displayed on the surfaces of the ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands. The festival is presented by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) of Singapore, promoting creativity along with sustainability and environmental friendliness.

Check out some of the light art installations by international artists from 10 countries in this edition of PhotoSparks, and see if you can organise a similar light art festival in your own city as well!
