5K people cleaning public place lands Vadodara in Guinness Book of World Records

5K people cleaning public place lands Vadodara in Guinness Book of World Records

Tuesday May 30, 2017 , 2 min Read

Vadodara, the 10th cleanest city in India, has created a new Guinness Record for the maximum number of people simultaneously cleaning a public space.

More than 5,000 people came together with brooms to clean up Akota Dandia Bazar Road on Sunday, sweeping the area in groups of 50. According to The Times of India, municipal commissioner Dr Vinod Rao said,

"The idea behind organising this event was to encourage people to keep their surroundings clean. Cleaning up the city is the duty of the VMC but keeping it clean is the collective responsibility of the citizens. Residents of the cultural capital of Gujarat have to inculcate the habit of cleanliness."

By doing this, the people of Vadodara broke the existing record created on February by Mexico where 1,767 people came together and cleaned a public space. Talking about the reason behind this initiative, Rao told The Hindustan Times,

“This unique programme was organised for celebrating the city’s inclusion in the 10 cleanest cities and as part of the commitment to become the cleanest city next year.”

In the presence of Vadodara MP Ranjan Bhatt and Mayor Bharat Dangar, the participants also took an oath to keep Vadodara clean. The 50,000 people who had gathered to witness the event sang the national anthem and national song. Hence they also plan to apply for a Guinness Record for the largest number of people singing both songs simultaneously at one place.

Acknowledging the record, the Guinness Book of World Records gave the Vadodara Municipal Corporation a certificate. The programme was also a tribute to the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
