Bengaluru to welcome bike-sharing system with 6K bicycles

After the humongous success of the 'Trin Trin' scheme in Mysuru, the Karnataka cabinet has cleared the eco-friendly project for Bengaluru at an estimated Rs 80.18 crore. The project will be implemented over 10–15 km across a few of the city's popular areas.

In June this year, when the Trin Trin project was launched in Mysuru, around 450 cycles were deployed at a cost of Rs 8.15 lakh. Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah had inaugurated the scheme. For Bengaluru, however, 6,000 cycles will be distributed in eight localities including MG Road, Indiranagar, Banaswadi, HBR Layout, Koramangala, HSR Layout, and Kacharakanahalli, says a report by The Hindu.

In Mysuru, the bicycles are free for the first one hour, with Rs 5 being charged for two hours, and so on. However, the prices for Bengaluru have not yet been revealed.

Law minister TB Jayachandra was quoted as saying,

The cabinet has given its green signal for implementing the project at an estimated cost of Rs 80.18 crore. Around 6,000 bicycles will be made available for the users.

This project is one among many such projects that the state government is initiating to solve Bengaluru's evolving and prominent traffic scenario. Recently, Minister for Development and Town Planning KJ George proposed to construct underground tunnels to bring down the vehicular density on roads. From proposals for flyovers to road-widening, there have been many solutions put forward by the government. E-commerce major Flipkart along with Namma Bengaluru Foundation and Deputy Commissioner of Traffic Police had recently launched the Gridlock Hackathon, which was a one-of-a-kind initiative to crowdsource innovative, implementable solutions.
