Oxford Dictionaries to launch 'Hindi word of the year' for the first time ever
Oxford Dictionaries is calling for 'The Hindi Word of the Year' which shall be a word or expression that has attracted a great deal of interest over the past year. This word should be able to reflect the ethos, mood, or preoccupations of the entire year. The Oxford Dictionaries has recently launched the Hindi dictionary on its web portal which is being accessed by a large number of users. Oxford has been creating dictionaries for over 150 years and is also planning to come up with Word of the Year in other Indian languages.
The Hindi Dictionaries team at Oxford University Press (OUP) will be involved in choosing the Hindi word of the year, along with an advisory panel of language experts, who will bring a unique perspective.
This expert panel includes popular writer and publisher Namita Gokhale; language expert Kritika Agrawal; journalist and former Associate Editor at AajTak, Saurabh Dwivedi; senior editorial manager at OUP India, Malika Ghosh; and Associate Professor at Ranchi University, Poonam Nigam Sahay.
Kritika Agarwal, Language Champion for Oxford's Hindi Living Dictionary said,
"The Hindi Word of the year is a big leap forward for the Hindi language as it aims to highlight the social and cultural relevance of Hindi in the current context. It is the campaign's endeavour to alter perceptions about languages being a living intangible heritage and not merely a static tool of communication."
An official statement by Oxford said, "To further supplement our research we're both calling on Hindi speakers across India to send us their word of the year suggestions and consulting with a panel of experts from a range of backgrounds."
