The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) has launched a five-year doctoral programme in entrepreneurship. The first two years will also involve coursework. The institute has a strong fellowship programme and also has expertise in incubating and mentoring startups.

Incubation takes place through the NS Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (NSRCEL). According to Republic World, NSRCEL is presently incubating 18 startups, the largest number for an academic institute. The centre has supported over 100 ventures and engaged nearly 15,000 entrepreneurs, creating around 4,500 jobs.

Despite the various ups and downs over the years, entrepreneurship has been an emerging hub in India. At such a juncture, this initiative, which aims to redefine the country's business and job ecosystem, is rather significant.

Though there has been a lot of discussion on the disruption entrepreneurship can create, not much rigorous research has been conducted on it.

Chairperson, Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) at IIMB, Professor Rejie George Pallathitta, told The Hindu Business Line,

Towards this objective, the PhD programme in entrepreneurship aims at providing an impetus to the increasing need for scholarly research in entrepreneurship and to create a vibrant pool of faculty specialising in that domain.

Professor K Kumar, Chairperson, Academic Programmes, NSRCEL, and senior faculty at IIMB, told The Hindu Business Line,

There is also a strong movement the world over to incorporate entrepreneurship as part of the curriculum of general and mainstream education.

The inclusion of entrepreneurship in mainstream education will require tremendous support from teachers and scholars alike, and a doctoral programme will help meet this need. With this initiative, IIMB will become the first business school in the country to offer an FPM with a specialisation in entrepreneurship.
