This Kolkata driver has received an award for not honking even once in 18 years
Driving on roads that are free from traffic and the noise of honking, is a dream of every citizen. While the former sounds like a dream come true, a Kolkata-based driver has made the latter, the mantra of his life.
Kolkata-based, Dipak Das has been driving on the roads for the last 18 years, without honking. Yes, you heard it right. Dipak has now been felicitated with the Manush Sanman award for setting up an example. He also carries a placard in his car that reads — Horn is a concept. I care for your heart.
Manush Mela, a humanity fair, has applauded his contribution towards a noise-free Kolkata. Dipak, who believes in no-horn policy, says that honking doesn't solve the problem of traffic on the road:
I think if a driver follows this no-horn policy, he will become more alert while driving. If a driver has proper sense of space, speed and timing, he or she need not use horn.
Renowned personalities like tabla maestro Pandit Tanmoy Bose and guitarist Kunal, who had hired him as a driver, have appreciated his intent. Dipak believes that Kolkata will soon become a “no-honking city”. According to a report by Hindustan Times, he said,
It is not something that cannot be achieved or very difficult to achieve. What is required for this is administrative and political goodwill.
