This Padma Shri doctor has been organising free clinic for the poor since past 43 years
With the increase in number of private hospitals, there is an abundance of private doctors in the country. This has impacted the healthcare facilities available for the poor and middle-class sections of the society. However, there are a few doctors who shine as a glimmer of hope in this darkness. B Ramana Rao is doing just that by providing free healthcare to the poor since the past few years.
Consulting physician and cardiologist, Dr Rao has treated many famous personalities like Hindi film actor Amitabh Bachchan, late Kannada film actor Rajkumar, and several politicians and bureaucrats. He received much fame over the years for his work but he never misused it.
From the past 43 years, he has been organising free clinics for the poor in the Begur village near Bengaluru, Karnataka. He started this clinic back in the year 1974, and was awarded Padma Shri in 2010 for his commendable work in the field of medicine. He had also been honoured for his medical service in rural areas by the former Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam in 2008.
With over 40 years of experience, Dr Rao organises free medical camps for the poor in Begur village each Sunday. He competed his MBBS from Manipal’s Kasturba Medical College, and credits his parents for inspiring him always to work for the society.
Dr Rao says that the state of healthcare facilities in the village is poor, which he considers is a basic human right for all irrespective of their class. Thus, to ensure no one is deprived of these basic healthcare facilities, he conducts these free medical camps every week.
Dr Rao visits the village with his team where they provide free consultations, and also provide them medicines and injections as per the requirement. They go ahead with the treatment only after providing a proper checkup. People from nearby villages also come till Begur, and stand in long queues to get themselves checked.
