Michelle Obama launches Global Girls Alliance to empower young girls through education
Michelle Obama announced the Global Girls Alliance, an initiative launched by The Obama Foundation to empower adolescent girls across the world through education.
The programme aims to help young girls through education to attain their full potential and change and transform the world around them, be it family, community or the country.
The simple message that the former First Lady delivered through this was, “The future of our world is only as bright as our girls.”
According to the Obama Foundation, “Today, more than 98 million adolescent girls around the world are not in school. That’s a lot of empty desks - and a lot of dreams that are being cut short. When girls get the opportunities they deserve, amazing things start to happen; poverty goes down, economies grow, families get stronger, and babies are born healthier. And the world, by all accounts, gets better.”
The Global Girls Alliance aims to upheld the work being done around the world to empower adolescent girls through education by - “inspiring, empowering, and connecting grassroots leaders, Driving specific commitments through GoFundMe, inspiring and challenging young people in the developed world to join us.”
The Obama Foundation was set up in 2014, a Chicago-based non-profit set up by Michelle and Barack Obama. The Global Girls Alliance is its latest initiative and was launched on October 11, the International Day of the Girl Child.
In most countries including India, girls don’t have access to education. Social mindsets, poverty and lack of toilets usually keep girls away from schools. In India, many organisations are working to empower the girl child. One example is CARE, a not-for-profit that helps girls and women from marginalised communities to lead better lives and livelihoods.
During his term as the President, Barack Obama and even Michelle Obama have emphasised upon the value of education for young people. As parents to two daughters, they are strong proponents of this programme. The Global Girls Alliance has also seen a lot of support come in from celebrities and influencers too. And while Michelle has been busy pushing more and more women to register and to vote, she will now also focus on the education of young girls through this new programme by the Obama Foundation.
