Thursday July 11, 2024 , 2 min Read

Bengaluru-based consumer electronic startup Indkal Technologies has forayed into the smartphone market under a trademark licensing agreement with global ICT giant Acer.

Under this agreement, Indkal will design, manufacture, and distribute smartphones under the Acer brand in India. It also marks the introduction of Acer-branded smartphones in the Indian market, the company said in a statement.

The company is set to launch the smartphones mid-2024 and aims to build strong momentum and a significant market share.

“Our customers will experience exceptionally well-designed smartphones with high end processors, top notch camera technology, and a host of premium features across the range. The best part is that all Acer-branded smartphones will be designed and manufactured in India, which is also a unique achievement for Indkal,” said Anand Dubey, CEO, Indkal Technologies.

According to International Data Corporation (IDC), the total mobile phone shipments is set to grow from 1,380.1 million units shipped in 2023 to 1,406.9 million units shipped in 2024 and grow to 1,440.5 million units worldwide by 2028, with a CAGR of 0.9% from 2023 to 2028.

Additionally, IDC reports also indicate that India’s smartphone market grew by 1% YoY in 2023 and shipped 146 million smartphones.

“With a focus on smartphones priced between 15,000 to 50,000 rupees, this market will now see strong competition,” Indkal Technologies said.

Aligning with the government's Make in India initiative, these smartphones will be manufactured in India and be available for purchase on both ecommerce platforms and offline retail stores across the country, it added.

“The Acer brand mission has always been to break barriers between people and technology. We are excited that Indkal Technologies will further this mission in India by providing a wide range of smartphones under the Acer brand that expand end user choices and enrich their experience in the India market," said Jade Zhou, VP, Global Strategic Alliances, Acer.
