Google Photos introduces an AI tool to remix videos instantly
Google Photos AI video remix tool lets users transform videos in seconds with Gemini Omni, adding relighting, backgrounds and art styles.
Google Photos has rolled out a new AI-powered feature called Video Remix, designed to help users remake everyday videos into more creative, shareable clips within seconds.
The tool was announced on 8 July 2026 and marks another step in Google’s broader effort to bring generative AI into everyday consumer apps. Instead of relying on complex editing software, users can now make visual changes through Google Photos with only a few taps.
What the Video Remix feature does
Video Remix is available through the Create tab in Google Photos. This section already acts as a central area for creative tools, and the new feature adds faster ways to restyle videos.
Users can enhance video lighting, swap backgrounds, and apply creative effects like watercolour, sketch, or oil painting. In short, the tool can make a video look brighter, more stylised or visually different without requiring professional editing knowledge.
For example, a basic indoor video could be given a softer morning glow, while another clip could be transformed to appear as though it was filmed in a greenhouse. These changes are powered by templates, making the process more accessible for casual users.
How Google is using Gemini Omni
The new Google Photos AI video remix tool is powered by Gemini Omni, Google’s model built to work across different forms of input. In this case, it helps interpret video content and apply creative edits quickly. For users, the main benefit is speed and simplicity.
The technical work happens in the background, while the user selects the desired style or effect. This approach highlights a trend in which companies are adding AI tools directly into familiar apps.
Google is competing with major technology firms such as Apple, OpenAI and Adobe, all of which are investing heavily in AI-assisted creation. By placing video editing inside Google Photos, Google is making its photo and video app more useful for everyday content creation.
Availability and wider AI push
Video Remix is eligible to Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers in some countries, including the U.S., India, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea, Turkey and others. The feature is not a full replacement for professional video editing suites, but it is aimed at users who want quick results without spending hours adjusting clips manually.
The launch follows other AI-based updates in Google Photos, including touch-up tools for subtle image edits and features that turn clothing photos into a digital closet.
Together, these additions show how Google is repositioning Photos from a storage app into a more active creative platform. For regular users, Video Remix could make short-form video editing easier, faster and more playful.
