Established in the year 2005, today Akhand Jyoti Eye hospital has emerged as the largest eye hospital in eastern India doing over 90,000 sight-restoring surgeries annually through its 5 surgical centres and 33 vision centres spread across Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. 80% of these surgeries are provided free of cost to underprivileged patients. Akhand Jyoti is working towards eliminating curable blindness from low-income geographies and restoring livelihoods of the poor. Akhand Jyoti also engages rural underprivileged girls, educate them through a 6 -year optometry programme and employs them to drive the blindness elimination programme. Presently there are 400+ girls in the system. Some of the girls already heading eye clinics, different departments at the hospital and rest are pursuing formal optometry courses. Akhand Jyoti’s work directly addresses 4 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, namely, goal numbers 1,3,8, and 10.
