Behaf — The conversation becomes the storefront For years, the way we shop online has been built around one basic idea: search. You search for a product, browse through options, compare prices, read reviews, add something to your cart and check out. But that's not always how people actually think about shopping. Sometimes you don't know what product you want. You know who you're buying for, what the occasion is, your budget, or simply what problem you're trying to solve. If my wife's birthday is coming up, for example, I may not want to search through hundreds of ""birthday gifts for wife."" I might simply want to say: “My wife's birthday is coming up. She likes jewellery and I have ₹5,000 to spend. What should I get her?” That is where the idea for Behaf comes from. We started building Behaf around WhatsApp automation and, while working with businesses, kept seeing how much of commerce was already happening through conversations. Customers were asking questions, sending screenshots, asking for recommendations, checking availability and following up on orders. But the actual buying journey was still fragmented. A customer might discover a product on Instagram, move to a website to browse, use another system to pay, and then return to WhatsApp to ask about delivery. For D2C brands, the complexity is even greater. They have to manage their storefront, payments, shipping, customer conversations and several other tools just to complete a sale. We started asking ourselves: What if the conversation itself could become the storefront? That became Behaf. Behaf is a conversational commerce platform built for Indian D2C brands. It gives brands a free chat store on WhatsApp where customers can discover products, ask questions, make purchases and receive order and shipping updates. But we don't think putting a catalogue inside WhatsApp is enough. The interesting part is what happens when AI becomes part of the shopping experience. Instead of forcing customers to understand categories, filters and search terms, Behaf allows them to simply explain what they are looking for. For example: “Mummy ke birthday ke liye ek achhi silk saree chahiye, 5 hazaar ke andar.” A traditional ecommerce interface expects the customer to translate that into filters. A conversational interface can understand the context: the occasion, the person, the product, the material and the budget. It can then ask the questions that actually matter and help narrow down the right products. That's what we mean by conversational commerce. People don't naturally think in product filters. They think in context. And we believe AI can make that context useful. For D2C brands, there is another important part of the equation. Selling isn't finished when someone finds a product. There is payment, order confirmation, shipping, tracking and customer support. Behaf brings these parts of the selling journey together so that brands don't have to stitch together another complicated technology stack just to sell online. Our philosophy is simple: The brand does the marketing. Behaf does the selling. The customer relationship remains with the brand, while Behaf handles the work behind the sale. We're building Behaf specifically for the new generation of Indian D2C brands — businesses that are often born on Instagram, built through communities and driven by direct relationships with customers. We believe these brands shouldn't necessarily have to choose between building an expensive technology stack and relying entirely on large marketplaces. They should be able to start selling simply. That's also why our model is designed around transactions rather than monthly software subscriptions. Brands don't pay simply to have a store sitting there. Behaf earns when a successful order happens. We are still early. Behaf is currently preparing for launch and onboarding our first group of founding D2C brands. We're using this stage to learn from real sellers and customers, understand where the friction actually exists and improve the product before scaling it. We don't know yet exactly how far conversational commerce will go. But we believe the direction is interesting. The first generation of ecommerce taught people to search. The second taught them to browse. Maybe the next generation will teach them to simply ask. That's the future we're exploring with Behaf. Not another marketplace to download. Not another website to learn. Just a better way to shop and sell — through a conversation. Grahak aapka. Kaam humara. The customer is yours. The work is ours."
