Headquartered in London, England, Busuu combines language learning courses, designed by experts, with AI-powered features and a community where learners can interact with native speakers. Busuu was founded by Bernhard Niesner and Adrian Hilti in 2008 with the name originating from the ‘Busuu’ language in Cameroon. They claim to be the world’s largest community for language learning, providing courses in 12 different languages on web and mobile to more than 100 million learners worldwide. Their users can sign up for free or subscribe to a Premium membership to unlock further features like advanced grammar lessons, Offline Mode, McGraw-Hill Education certification or our adaptive Vocabulary Trainer. In 2015, Busuu formed a partnership with McGraw-Hill Education and together, have created an official certification to allow our students to validate their language learning. Their tests measure mastery of the core topics in A1, A2, B1 or B2, the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). After successfully passing a test, students will receive an official level certificate awarded by McGraw-Hill Education. Busuu has launched language learning platform for schools, universities and companies in May 2016 – Busuu for Organisations. The platform allows organisations to get access to Busuu’s Premium language courses and measure students' progress over time. Instructors are able to create classrooms, invite students, access the full Busuu curriculum and follow their progress within an interactive dashboard.
