[HerStoryRecommends] Watch the intense Firebrand on Netflix and read the story of feisty war correspondent, Marie Clovin - our top picks of the week
In HerStoryRecommends this week, we review the Netflix original Firebrand and give you an insight into the life of foreign correspondent Marie Clovin.
Fire and justice
Produced by Priyanka Chopra and brought to you by the award-winning director Aruna Raje, the recently-released Netlflix original Firebrand takes on feminism as we see it today. Sunanda Raut (Usha Jadhav) is a family lawyer who fights for women's justice. Her life in court revolves around women who have been wronged or are victims of domestic violence. With her well-reasoned arguments, she ensures that justice is neither delayed nor denied. But Sunanda is battling demons of her own. Constant nightmares take her to the past in which she was raped as a schoolgirl. Fifteen years since, she suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and is unable to live a fulfilling life with her considerate and understanding husband Madhav Patkar (Girish Kulkarni). The rage she feels towards her rapist is channeled into her work and strengthens her constant need to seek justice for victims of abuse. She takes on the case of Divya Patel, who is seeking a divorce from her husband, Anand, and this sub-plot takes us through the many layers of revenge, justice, and even autism and mental health. Sometimes, Firebrand delves into too many topics leaving the viewer slightly confused. However, it's hard-hitting in many parts, which makes it worth a watch.

In a battle with war
Journalists reporting from conflict zones witness the horrors of war firsthand. The book, In Extremis: The Life of War Correspondent Marie Clovin tells a similar story of Marie Clovin who covered the truths of wars and the people who suffered in them in some of the most war-torn regions of the world. The book is written by fellow foreign correspondent Lindsey Hilsum. Marie travels to Sri Lanka, where she is hit by a grenade and loses vision in her right eye. Unfazed, she continues to report all across Israel, Palestine, Chechnya, East Timor, Sri Lanka, Iraq, and Aghanistan and meet with politicians like Gaddafi and Arafat. Marie's adventures and life came to a halt after she was killed while reporting in Syria in 2012 . The book provides deep insight into one of the bravest correspondents of all time, and is a testimony to the horrors ordinary people go through during a war. Definitely, a must-read.
