Indian Army Colonel Sofia Qureshi has been named in the 2026 Republic Day honours list for the Vishisht Seva Medal, recognising her distinguished service during Operation Sindoor. She gained national attention for briefing the media and countering misinformation following the cross-border operation.
Indian Army Colonel Sofia Qureshi has been selected for the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) in the 2026 Republic Day honours list, recognising her distinguished service and leadership, particularly during Operation Sindoor against terror infrastructure across the border.
On the eve of India’s 77th Republic Day, the defence ministry announced that Colonel Qureshi will be conferred the Vishisht Seva Medals (VSM), one of the country’s most prestigious service decorations awarded for distinguished service in the armed force. A total of 85 VSMs have been approved this year, honouring officers across the Indian armed forces for their exemplary contribution.
Colonel Qureshi earned national attention for her role in Operation Sindoor, where she was entrusted with briefing the media alongside Indian Air Force officers to explain the operation’s objectives and outcomes.
According to reports, her clear and measured articulation of the mission helped convey India’s position during this sensitive period, and her efforts were pivotal in countering false narratives in communicating India’s targeted action following the Pahalgam terror attack in 2025.
The Republic Day honours list also includes some of India’s most notable gallantry and distinguished service awards. Alongside Colonel Qureshi’s VSM, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla was awarded the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry decoration, for his historic mission as the first Indian astronaut to reach the International Space Station.
Other honours approved by President Droupadi Murmu include Kirti Chakras, Shaurya Chakras, Sena medals, and a range of service medals across Army, Navy and Air Force personnel.
