Kiaran Mazumdar-Shaw names niece Claire as successor
Claire Mazumdar is the founding CEO of Bicara Therapeutics, a company incubated by Biocon.
Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Founder and Executive Chairperson of Biocon, has signalled a clear succession roadmap for the group, naming her niece, Claire Mazumdar, as the next in line to lead the company.
In an interview with Fortune India, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw said the company is gearing up for its next phase of growth, with a sharper focus on advanced biotechnology and the integration of artificial intelligence
Claire Mazumdar, 37, has led Bicara Therapeutics, a company incubated by Biocon as the founding CEO since 2018. She steered it to a public listing in 2024. Bicara Therapeutics, founded by Mazumdar-Shaw, focuses on developing cancer therapies, including bi-specific antibodies currently in clinical trials.
Claire Mazumdar, founding CEO of Bicara Therapeutics, previously led business development and corporate strategy at Rheos Medicines, where she played a key role in securing a major partnership with Roche. She also worked as a Senior Associate at Third Rock Ventures, focusing on company formation and supporting business development across its portfolio. In addition, she serves on the board of Noora Health, which works to improve patient outcomes by equipping family caregivers with essential skills.
She holds a Bachelor of Science in Biological Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and a PhD in Cancer Biology from the Stanford School of Medicine. Her research in tumour immunology and cancer epigenetics has been published in leading journals including Nature, Cell Stem Cell, and Cancer Cell.
While posting a link to the announcement on X, Mazumdar-Shaw said, “Claire will transition into my role at the right time so not planning to hang up my boots just yet!!”
Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw founded Biocon in 1978 in the garage of her rented home in Bengaluru, starting with a seed capital of Rs 10,000. Today, the company has grown into a global biopharmaceutical player, delivering affordable treatments for diabetes, cancer, and autoimmune diseases to patients in over 120 countries.
In an earlier interview with YourStory, Mazumdar-Shaw shared that, like most first-generation women entrepreneurs, she too faced her share of biases and challenges.
With limited financial resources but a determined vision, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw built her journey on frugality and fearlessness. In the early days, she personally travelled across the country, often by bus, to meet customers, taking on both marketing and sales herself in the absence of a large team. Those formative experiences, she has said, taught her self-reliance and resilience, shaping her belief in substance over status symbols.
