Pipe Coatings Market - Global Industry Insights Opportunity Analysis 2025
Friday September 29, 2017 , 4 min Read
Pipe coating is the process of coating a pipeline with protective materials to prevent corrosion. These are applied on the interior and exterior of the pipeline. The pipe coating market is segmented into two types, namely, external and internal coatings. The external corrosion usually occurs in the form of oxide formation due to exposure to air and water, while the internal corrosion is the result of chemically active materials in the pipeline stream reacting with the pipe material.
Pipe coating has been observed to be the most reliable method for corrosion prevention. The application of pipe coatings offers increased wear resistance, flow enhancement, reduced effect of abrasion. Other corrosion prevention methods such as impressed current cathodic protection, sacrificial anode, inhibitors are not very effective on their own and hence are used in conjunction with pipe coatings. The coatings are decided based on parameters such as operating environment (water, air, and soil), operating temperatures and pressures, state and chemical properties of the fluid, viscosity, and flammability.

Choice of external and internal coatings are determined based on the environment and type of fluid flowing in the pipeline. Corrosive fluids containing sulfur, sand or other reactive elements require specialized coatings to protect pipe interiors. External coatings are required in locations where water, soil, air pose problems. The coatings applied are of two types, namely, powder and liquid coatings. Powder coatings offer better durability and have the environmental advantage of not having any solvents or VOC’s. Further segmentation is on basis of coating material. Newer products such as thermoplastic polymers offer better performance and life on comparing with metallic and concrete counterparts.
The oil and gas industry, and chemical processing industry are the largest end user segments for pipe coatings market. The cost effectiveness of pipelines has resulted in development in both upstream and downstream industries. Pipelines used in oil & gas industry are both onshore and offshore. Furthermore, they transport crude oil, natural gas, refined product lines, water and CO2 (injection) from country to country. Instability of the oil price and concerns regarding the effect on marine and land ecosystems remain major restraints to growth. Moreover, pipe coating market in water transportation pipelines is also the key end use industry in the pipe coatings market. The pipe coatings are largely applied in sewage and potable water pipelines.
Surging demand in Asia-Pacific and North America Augmenting Market Growth
North America region is expected to be the dominant region in the global pipe coatings market. Increased production from the Permian and Delaware Basins has resulted in increased demand for new pipelines or expansion of current ones to the Gulf Coast Refineries. In addition, the construction of pipelines allows the companies to cut losses as they are more cost effective option than trucking. Additionally, the recently announced pipelines in Alaska and British Columbia (Canada) are worth US$ 86 billion which are certain to have a positive impact on the pipe coating industry.
The Asia-Pacific region is estimated to be the fastest-growing region in global pipe coatings market. India, China and Indonesia are the fastest growing markets in Asia-Pacific region. The demand for chemical products has boosted the chemical industry. Increased FDI in emerging economies such as India will also augment growth. In addition, rapid urbanization of the developing countries has led to the boom of the real estate market (both residential and commercial) and ensued in the need for sewage and potable water pipeline infrastructure. In Europe, the declining gas production in the British and Dutch fields will result in increased demand from Russia. This is likely to spur pipeline projects. For instance, Nord Stream 2 project from Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea and the Turkish Stream project from Russia to Europe via Turkey. Latin America has seen the announcement of pipeline projects in Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador and Mexico. Though environmental concerns persist due to close proximity of many pipelines to ecologically sensitive Amazon forests and coral reefs which may lead to an outcry from the public and environmental lobby is the major restraint in of pipe coatings in Latin America.
Some major players in the pipe coatings market are The Dow Chemical Company, Covestro AG, Celanese Corporation, Bayou Companies, Wasco Energy Group of Companies, Bredero Shaw and E.I. Du Pont Nemours and Co.
