Changing landscape of entrepreneurial incubation

How a drive from government is accelerating the incubation activities in Delhi

Key insight

March 2016: an initiative is rolled out by Government of NCT of Delhi to promote entrepreneurship across leading institutes in Delhi.

March 2017: 11 prominent institutes in Delhi are at different stages of running the incubation centers, creating fantastic ecosystem for startups

The Exciting Story

As the initiative was rolled out, initially 6 prominent institutes across Delhi were given the mandate and grant to set-up progressive, futuristic incubation centers.  These were   Ambedkar University Delhi (AUD), Delhi Technological University (DTU),  Indira Gandhi Technical University for Women (IGTUW),  Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology (NSIT),  Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi (IIITD) and  Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies (SSCBS).   Each institute thus promoted a section 8 company respectively to launch the incubation center.

Within few months of the roll out, one can see about 20 start-ups from the students, and each of this start-up having an amazing and innovative idea.    The success of such centers can be attributed to the support provided by respective host institution, and to the professional CEOs hired / being hired to run the incubation center company.   For example, DTU -IIF is being led by Prof. Manoj Sharma who is a well read academician and PhD in management. SSCBS-IIF 's CEO Naresh Priyadarshi is an alumnus of SSCBS itself with MBA from IIM-A and 26 years in corporate leadership roles; AUD CIIE is being run by Mr. Farooqui who is a highly accomplished technical expert and designer with expertise in innovation and education.

After the initial success during the test run, the initiative has been expanded to include five more institutes, viz.,  Acharya Narendra Dev College (ANDC),  Ambedkar Institute of Advanced Communication Technologies and Research (AICTR),  Bhai Parmanand Institute of Business Studies (BPIBS),  College of Arts, Delhi Pharmaceutical Science & Research University (DPSRU) .

You can look out for more developments  through this initiative to make Delhi the start-up hub of India.  This initiative is being coordinated by DTTE of Govt. of NCT of Delhi, and TiE-NCR is one of the agencies helping on this.
