Narendra Modi

Narendra Damodardas Modi was born on 17th September 1950. He is an Indian politician who served as Gujarat’s chief minister from 2001 to 2014 and as a Member of Parliamentfor Varanasi. Modi is additionally a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a right-winged Hindu nationalist organisation. He was appointed the 15th Prime Minister of India in May 2014.

Born and raised in Vadnagar, located in the Mehsana district of Gujarat, he was introduced to the work of the RSS at the age of 8. He was appointed as a full-time worker for the organisation in 1971, after which he was appointed a member of the BJP, in the year of 1987. Over the course of 15 years, he performed various roles and held numerous positions within the political party. He was appointed as their General Secretary in 2001.

In the same year, he was appointed Chief Minister of Gujarat, and a few months later elected to the legislative assembly. His administrative decisions had been called into question after the 2002 Gujarat riots. A special investigation team was put together by the Supreme Court of India in 2012 to investigate these accusations. The team found no evidence against him and further prosecution proceedings were not pursued.

In the year of 2014, under his leadership, the BJP acquired a parliamentary majority vote, a first for the party since1984. He is presently serving his second term as India’s prime minister.
