Let’s say you don’t know your four wheel drive from your reverse gear, buying a used car in that context would be akin to playing Russian roulette with five chambers loaded. Though the costs would be less lethal the price would still be quite high. Dr. Car is your guide and advisor when it comes to buying a used car. Mr. Viren Choudary the Director of Dr. Car spoke eloquently on their stance on the previously owned automobile and the other services that they offer in the auto retail segment.Business Idea- Mr. Viren expanded our grasp of Dr. Car and its business concepts saying “Dr.Car, set-up in the year 2006, was conceptualized with the intent of delivering value to the pre-owned car customer by bringing in advanced processes, accountability, transparency and convenience.”

“Promoted by professionals with expertise in car retailing, Dr.Car with over 2000 hassle-free walk-in customers every month, has emerged as the largest, most credible and trustworthy facilitation platform for buyers and sellers of used cars to connect and transact. Dr.Car has on display at its highly organized yard in Hyderabad the largest selection of certified used cars.”

“Dr.Car is only a facilitator for an exchange and does not buy or sell used cars.”

“Dr. Car is also continually examining the various other facets of the auto retail chain wherein its unique brand of innovation and improved efficiency can render value to the customer. In line with this, Dr. Car has launched beta products in new cars and motor insurance.”

“All services from Dr. Car are in sync with our guiding philosophy which is cost, convenience and confidence.”

Target Market- Their designs lie not just on used cars, the scent of brand new upholstery also marks their plans. Mr. Viren says “The scope is the auto retail industry comprising of pre- owned cars, new cars, motor insurance and after sales services.”

“At this point, however, we are strongly present in the pre- owned car space and in the process of fine tuning or identifying products for the other areas.

The opportunity market is all those who are owners of cars or intend to own a car.”

What sets them apart –It’s not just some used cars at reasonable prices or even business strategy that sets Dr. Car apart. Mr. Viren explains”The most significant difference is our culture of not doing things in the established manner. We scan the various processes and services of the existing frame work and identify and isolate such areas wherein through bringing in innovative practices and advanced practices, we can deliver to our customer an advantage in either cost or convenience or both.”

“It is in such spaces that we make our offerings. This is a continual process and uses as its chief driver customer feedback and need. The business model in the pre- owned car space manifests this. The used car industry hitherto suffered from a lack of accountability, transparency and convenience. By bringing these 3 together plus introducing or incorporating the element of trust by being a facilitator, Dr. Car has delivered value to buyers and sellers of used cars.”

Future Plans- “In our view, the need served by Dr. Car is common across the Nation. We intend to identify those markets that are large enough to sustain a facility and establish through replication of the existing business model.” Says Mr. Viren.

Dr. Car also aims “To be recognized as a leading provider of reliable, consistent, convenient and cost efficient solutions in the minds of consumers in the auto retail space.”

His entrepreneurial journey- Mr. Viren told us of the three things that make entrepreneurship worthwhile for him. He states them saying “It allows freedom that cannot be had inside a job. The work is rarely repetitive. There is potential to make a mark.”

The journey has not been without its pit stops but in the long run he views them as necessary. Mr. Viren says “There have been a significant number of small mistakes but fortunately, because of minute attention, courses were corrected before the mistakes could blow up into fatal proportions.”

“The very essence of an entrepreneur is correction through constant introspection and examination. Fortunately, none of the mistakes I have made have assumed mortal proportions. The ‘nature of the beast’ is a continuing series of judgment calls. I am quite sure that I will make many more mistakes but hope the same resilience and quick response that has held me in good stead in the past will continue to do so in the future.”

Recognition gained- Dr. Car may not have a trophy room bristling under the weight of awards but they are gladder of other honors. Mr. Viren spoke of what he values most saying “Undoubtedly, being able to build Trust and Respect in the minds of our staff and customers over the years.”

Entrepreneurial Lesson– Mr. Viren Choudary cites the Indian entrepreneurs’ bane as “Inertia” adding that “Universally, there is a challenge in convincing a consumer or equally a regulator to adapt to a different way of functioning or thinking. In our markets, this is compounded because people also have ‘natural misgivings’ toward new things.”

To forewarn and forearm his fellow citizens desirous of the entrepreneurs’ life he recalls an incident “Ernest Shackleton, one of the early Antarctic explorers placed this recruitment advertisement in the 1900’s :

‘Men wanted for hazardous journey, small wages. Bitter cold. Long months of complete darkness. Constant danger. Safe return doubtful. Honor and recognition in case of success “

“The above quote pretty much sums up metaphorically the challenges that an entrepreneur will face.”
