Tamana Chona, is the winner of Dr. Batra's Positive Health Awards and is associated with Tamana, NGO incepted by her mother for specially challenged

Dr. Batra Award

“Three decades ago after the birth of my daughter Tamana, I had a dream to create a world of inclusion. It has taken 25 years of struggle by us to open the minds of Indian society to accept the disabled. As my daughter Tamana has grown into a well settled and independent adult, so has the organization.” – says Dr. Shayama Chona, mother of Tamana Chona. Tamana Chona, Tamana Chona, is a cerebral palsy afflicted...Tamana is one of those brave children who despite her physical limitations helps her mother and is strongly associated with the NGO work in whatever capacity. YourStory spoke to Tamana to share her inspiring story…

YourStory: What are the challenges you seem to be facing?

Tamana: As far as challenges are concerned there are many. Firstly the disabled group in our nation has long remained an invisible group in the mind of policy maker and a vast number of disabled are excluded

from the existing services and programme. Not only that the disabled in India can neither attend school nor go to a college and getting employment is next to impossible. Furthermore something as simple and

ordinary as going to a cinema hall or a park becomes a sort of ordeal. Personally I feel people are not very sensitive and do not realize that the disabled have desires and wishes just like anyone else. They

do not need anyone’s pity or sympathy but love and support.

YourStory: How does it feel to be the winner of Dr.Batra's Positive Health Award?

Tamana: It is a great honour to be the winner of Dr. Batra’s Positive Health Award. It is a great achievement and I feel proud to be one of the recipients.

YourStory: Do you think an Award like this makes a difference? Has it impacted you in some way?

Tamana: I am happy that awareness has now set in and hopefully there will be an increased support for this group.

YourStory: Any message for the others

Tamana: My message to everyone is dream big and with eyes wide open. There is nothing that one cannot do if one has the desire and will. To those who are still looking for a helping hand I want to say don’t give up as there is a light at the end of every tunnel.
