India Clashes with Sri Lanka on Twitter Worldwide : World Cup 2011 Goes Social

Friday April 01, 2011 , 4 min Read

We believe Social Media is getting bigger by the day. And Radian 6 acquisition just goes ahead to validate what we continue to believe. What better way to map this growth then to track the sentiments on the social network- Twitter- about the big day tomorrow. Most of us online today know that Twitter has become one of the most favourite platforms for people to discuss the current issues and debate over controversial situations. Let’s not forget that the recent political turmoil in Middle East was fuelled by the platform, making it an epicentre for global conversations.

Though Social Media is still catching up in India, the buzz is quite strong. With the rise in 3G and Smartphone revolution, India is definitely going the Social way.

Let’s see what the social media space worldwide has to say about Team India and Sri Lanka.

The above chart shows that out of proportion, the negative sentiment among people for Indian Team is 3% higher than that for Sri Lankan Team.

The above timeline graph clearly marks the important events on Cricket World Cup 2011. During the semi-final match between India and Pakistan the conversation has peaked to above 3500 tweets. Whereas the semi-final match between Sri-Lanka and New Zealand did not catch that much of interest. It clearly shows the preferences of cricket fans.

But where are these conversations originating from. Are they tweeting from laptop or smartphone? The next bit of information will help us clarify that.

Twitter conversations are completely bent towards India and the sentiment are largely towards India winning the match tomorrow. Though we can’t really say much before we see the men in blue in action tomorrow, we wish them the very best!

We are happy to know where lies your sentiments. Do let us know your feedback.
