Twitter adds 5 Indian Cities to its Local Trends Feature

Twitter today has added 5 Indian cities to the list of cities for which the local trending topics feature is available. The feature is now available for Ahmedabad, Bangalore , Chennai, Delhi and Hyderabad in addition to Mumbai which was included back in April 2011.
Although there are other third party platforms like Trendsmap to track trending topics in cities, this is significant because trending topics is something that is visible to all Twitter users who use the Twitter web interface and many third party Twitter clients. Twitter trending topics is a easy way to gauge popular sentiment and conversations happening worldwide or in a specific geographic area. With the new addition we will able to see city wise popular topics and updates happening in twitterverse. This also signifies the increasing Twitter usage in India as the official Twitter FAQ section on trending topics reads "If you don't see your country or city, it means we're not receiving enough Tweets from that geographical area to create a list."
Trends are also important for Twitter from a revenue perspective as advertisers pay to be included among the trends. With city wise trending topics, local players will be able to use this for reaching out to their specific target audience.
