Tier 2 Cities Picking up on Ecommerce; Vadodara gets its Online Vegetable Shop

Tier 2 Cities Picking up on Ecommerce; Vadodara gets its Online Vegetable Shop

Tuesday September 04, 2012 , 3 min Read

We once asked the question, is India ready to buy vegetables online? It certainly looks like yes! Post metros, tier 1 and 2 cities are joining the bandwagon with Vadodara getting it's online vegetable shop.

Vegetablesonwheels is one such startup from the cultural capital of Gujarat State, Vadodara. It is an online platform for buying fresh & premium quality vegetables and fruits at economical price.

The team is lead by four people, Vinay (MBA – Health care), Purvi (Bachelor in Home Science, Food and nutrition), Jignesh (B.Com) and Jinal (B.com and Diploma in computer system). This team of four manages Customer care, Quality assurance, Purchase and Computer system among themselves.

The idea of entrepreneurship struck us while travelling in train to our work place and discussing about the daily routine (for purchasing vegetables & fruits) of our family members. How difficult was it for our family members to purchase daily requirements like vegetables and do other household chores in our absence, this led to further research and finally the seed of Vegetablesonwheels germinated,” says Vinay.

With Vegetablesonwheels, one gets:

  • Farm fresh vegetables and fruits, segregated, washed and freshly packed in food grade packing material for free home delivery.
  • Economical rates.
  • Pre-booking via their website as well as phone.
  • Environment friendly Supply Chain (E-bikes)

Vegetables on wheels is different from other conventional vendors as they provide fresh vegetables & fruit (they do not keep any stock for next day), washed and processed to remove maximum effect of pesticides and packed in food grade plastic only. They purchase fresh vegetables and fruits directly from the farmers thus saving the costs of the middlemen. To keep the cost competitive and make it environment friendly, they provide all deliveries on E-bikes. This also saves directly and indirectly the carbon emission in environment. They also collect the plastic bags used for packing and send it to safe hands for recycling.

The biggest challenge that we have faced till date is to make people believe that they can actually buy vegetables online in small city such as Vadodara, and break their daily regime of buying vegetables and fruits from roadside vendors/cart wheelers. But, after providing good services and quality vegetables we were able to built strong customer base. Now, not only they place repeat orders but are like our brand ambassadors,” says Purvi.

Judging the response that they have got till date they are planning to take it to other cities as well. They are also aiming to add some more grocery products as well.Barodians can check out Vegetablesonwheels! This vegetable delivery startup from Baroda has a Page on YourStory Pages!
