Yes, Sri Lanka also has startups, and plenty of them! One of India’s most prolific investors Rajan Anandan hails from Sri Lanka and he is actively involved in the local Sri Lankan startup arena as well. Rajan co-founded Blue Ocean Ventures along with Prajeeth Balasubramaniam to invest in promising Sri Lankan startups and they also have IAN (Indian Angel Network) in the fray for a platform called Venture Engine. Venture Engine got 8 companies funded in 2012 and they are back in 2013 with a Hackathon- Hikka Hack.
Hikka Hack is an intense 36 hours session in which teams of like-minded individuals share ideas, work together and make way to building a start-up which has a chance of getting funded. This year, 10 companies will be selected and there is space for 2 Indian teams. And all this on a serene Sri Lankan beach.
A fully expense paid trip is up for grabs for one CEO (representing a team) and of course, the experience of staying in Sri Lanka is priceless.
Who can apply?
There are two options:
1) If you’re a team looking to startup or have already started up, you can apply. The chosen team’s CEO will get a chance to come down to Sri Lanka and be a part of the hackathon. Two other team members can accompany but they’ll have to manage their travel.
The second selected team will have to manage their complete travel.
2) If you’re a kick ass developer and want to be a part of the hackathon, you can apply as well.
