[In 60 seconds] Eric Savage, co-founder & president, Unitus Capital
One teacher I remember, and why
At Duke I had the privilege of taking a course from Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Coles (jointly with Alex Harris). I was really inspired by the stories he could tell about having witnessed the desegregation of schools in the American south and many other things. The passion with which he could relate a story was completely mesmerising. I wish I was back in his classroom today.
One most valuable work lesson, thus far
I learned from Mike Murray that Everything starts with a great hire and everything starts to go wrong when you settle for an average hire. We must expect excellence from ourselves and everyone with whom we work. The importance of our work demands it.
One thing I look for the most in a new recruit
A passion to make a difference.
One thought from a book I am currently reading
I recently read ‘Mindset’ by the great Carol Dweck. She talks a lot about how leaders focus on the journey – an inclusive, learning-filled, rollicking journey!
One tip for time management
Don’t look at your email more than every three hours. Focus instead on your ‘to do’ list.
One key thing in my fitness routine
You need a goal. I’m a basketball player so I focus on getting ready for an annual event in which I play at Duke.
One signal that tells me there is a problem
My wife is yelling at me…
One technique for handling anger
I think of my three-year-old son Max running around in his underwear pretending he’s a WWE fighter…
One essential ingredient in my investment portfolio
Being a long-term investor is the only strategy that makes sense to me.
One good thing about the new generation
They’ll soon be replaced…. JK; the best thing about young people is their enthusiasm.
One worrying thing about the young
Many of the brightest young people aspire to follow in the footsteps of my generation, wanting to be investment bankers and management consultants.
One thing that clinches a deal
Honesty
