Put your code to better use, develop for a social cause
If writing endless lines of code is making your life meaningless, if you’re not able to connect with customers and if you’re feeling frustrated, the news is good: life in software development does not have to be so unrewarding. There are at least a 100 organisations solving India’s most pressing development problems and they’re seeking your software development skills.
In the last decade, we’ve seen some disruption in technology; it’s made everyone realise its importance and the role it can play. While a lot of this disruption has brought people closer and, perhaps, even solved problems, a lot more is yet to happen to solve the social problems of a developing country such as ours.
We’re yet to effectively use technology to solve problems that affect the social and political milieu of our country. If you’re wondering how countless lines of code can help, think about this: your code can help build a mobile app for thousands of field officers in-charge of credit delivery to unbanked Indians. It could help create a platform for volunteers and enthusiasts to champion their favourite cause and track their social impact. It could help an organisation track the number of malnourished children they’ve saved due to their intervention. Or, it could help educate children who do not have access to privileged schooling systems. These are just a few examples how your skills can help change lives.
The right place to begin
There are different ways to hopon the technology bandwagon in the not-for-profit social space. Many organisations offer a host of opportunities -both volunteering and part time- if you find it difficult to make up your mind. You could test the waters and then decide to take the plunge.
One thing is for sure – you will never be short of challenges or problems to solve. You will never be short of opportunities for developing software that changes lives of millions.
Skill sets the social world is looking for are nothing less than cutting edge! We’re looking for the best brains with all the latest skills in tech, including enterprise and mobile technologies (Struts, Spring, Hibernate, NodeJS, AngularJS, Express, Mongo DB), analytics and continuous delivery.
Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore famously said, “You cannot cross the sea merely by standing and staring at the water.” As Co-founder of Rang De, a NGO that relies heavily on technology, my recommendation would be to jump in, as you have more to gain than lose in this world.
Perhaps, your pockets may feel a bit lighter as we may not help you fill your coffers. But we assure you a good night’s sleep after a tiring day of work. Each day becomes an adventure aimed at solving the big and the small problems that are not about oneself, but for the greater cause. Don’t forget to check our career options for techies. We have all of these and many more opportunities still under wraps. To know more, do write to [email protected] or [email protected].
