5 star performers from the MobileSparks alumni

5 star performers from the MobileSparks alumni

Tuesday July 28, 2015 , 3 min Read

Mobile has been ruling the roost for quite some time now. In 2012, when we perceived the surge in smartphone and internet penetration, we launched MobileSparks, so we could showcase India’s best mobile innovations. Over the last three years, a bunch of exciting companies have presented and launched at the event and we’re extremely proud of each of them. The 2015 edition is just around the corner, and as a run-up to the event we look at some of the star performers from the MobileSparks portfolio:

  • Uniphore: A speech recognition solutions company, Uniphore was at the first edition of MobileSparks to highlight their focus on mobile. Last month, June 2015, this Chennai-based company received a new investment from IDG Ventures. They had earlier raised their Series A round from Kris Gopalakrishnan (co-founder of Infosys), among others. Their solutions for voice biometrics, their virtual speech assistant, and their speech analytics features aim to change the way enterprises engage their consumers, build loyalty, and maintain a healthy bottom-line.
  • Mad Street Den: Launched at MobileSparks 2013, MSD offers AI and computer vision as plug-and-play solutions to businesses around the world. Their cloud platform - the MADStack - offers a wide range of computer vision modules, in order to deliver new experiences to their consumers. Earlier this year, MSD raised $1.5M (9cr.) from Reservoir Investments’ Exfinity Fund and GrowX ventures.
  • Haptik: A messaging app, Haptik started out as a WhatsApp for customer support, and raised $1 million from Kalaari Capital. Since then, it has been growing rapidly, and has pivoted to a personal assistant app, finding that more lucrative. So now, Haptik provides a lot more than customer support, and has a team of experts who can help users with any task. The company has grown to over 200 people, and recently onboarded an NLP veteran to consolidate their technology platform. Haptik was launched at MobileSparks 2013.
  • CultureAlley: Backed with $6.5 million by Tiger Global, 500 Startups and KAE Capital, CultureAlley is all about languages. A 2013 MobileSparks company, CultureAlley tried out various things before hitting the target with their HelloEnglish app. More than 400,000 users across 220 countries have used CultureAlley as of now, and the company has two focus areas. The major one is the HelloEnglish App, which has more than a million downloads, and then come the other courses.
  • SquadRun: Showcased at the latest MobileSparks 2014, SquadRun provides a mobile workforce on demand. The company helps crowdsource business problems to an intelligent mobile workforce. Having raised a round of funding from the founders of Zomato, SlideShare, Toppr and more, SquadRun has found new use cases in outbound calling, and testing and surveys. For businesses, the value proposition is an efficient workforce at a low cost, while for users, SquadRun opens up a secondary source of income.

These are some of the innovative mobile businesses from India that are doing very well, and are gearing up to scale further. 2015 is probably the year in which many mobile businesses will start maturing. Also, the increasing pool of mobile users creates ground for more companies to be formed.
