Pune-based startup Airstream launches new video streaming app Bollywod Masti
Pune-based startup AirStream.io, a product of Nityaa Labs, recently launched Bollywood Masti, an online curated video streaming app.
“We found that movie-watching experience is still broken even though there are so many movie streaming apps. The problem with these apps is either video content overload, or the inability to find the right content. We thought we should solve both these problems with Bollywood Masti. We offer a curated list of suggestions based on your interest, which you are more likely to watch,” said Jitin Pillai, CEO, Nityaa Labs.
Bollywood Masti allows users to watch Bollywood movies, music videos, comedy clips, and trailers for free. As of now, the videos are curated manually from sources like Youtube and Vimeo, etc. by a team of editors.
They will soon start using their machine learning algorithm, which they are working on, to recommend content based on the users’ consumption patterns and videos their friends watch. In the future, users will also be able to recommend content to their friend.
While Airstream currently has over 700,000 downloads from across the globe, in just two weeks since the launch of Bollywood Masti, the app has around 3,000 downloads and the website around 5,000 daily visits.
According to a study conducted by market research firm, JuxtSmartMandate, listening to music online is the third most preferred activity of urban Internet users in India, after email and social media.
It reported that as many as 97.4 million people in urban India listened to music online, which is almost 63 percent of the 168 million total urban Internet users. It also reported that 75 percent of the traffic came from mobile phones.
The leading music streaming apps in India are Gaana, Saavn, Shazam, and Hungama, with over 10 million downloads each.
Earlier this year, the startup raised an undisclosed round of funding led by Extreme Venture Partners, based in Canada, and Indian investors, including Globevestor, Powerhouse Ventures, GSF, Nandan Shah, and Rajiv Patel.
According to Jitin, Bollywood Masti, will eventually be a crowdsourced platform for videos, and will expand into offering content in other languages too.
