There is no dearth of freelance writers in our country. While some generate great pieces, others fancy themselves as writers. It is important to figure out whether you fall in the former or latter category. Just as there is a multitude of writers in the industry, there is also plenty of work that needs to be done. Once you manage to lay your finger on what it is that employers are looking for, you will be able to bag high-paying clients easily. While quality work is a given, it is also important to maintain the consistency with which you write and adhere to deadlines.

Here are a few ways in which you can attract clients:

Get in touch with the right person

If you're sending an email to a generic inbox, there is very little chance that you will get through to the right person. Instead, do some research and direct your email to those people in the company who will need your services. It is very important for the decision makers to see your message if you want to land the client.

Collaborate with other freelancers

Just as there are freelance writers, there are freelance graphic designers, project managers, and web developers, too. Sometimes these freelancers are in need of top-notch writers to help them nail the perfect content for their client. This is where you come in. If you collaborate with them, they recommend your name if the client requires a writer. This works both ways and is a win-win situation for everyone involved.

Stay in touch with old clients

A lot of freelance writers miss out on good business because they don't stay in touch with their old clients. It doesn't hurt to dial a call or drop an email mentioning that you have the bandwidth for additional work. As aptly put by Samar Owais, “You never know when a client might send work your way simply because you popped up on their radar at the right time.”

Harp about what you do

There are many online communities where clients post their requirement for freelance writers. Make it a point to find out which the genuine ones are. Once you do, post a brief description of your skills and past experience to attract the right clients that are present on those groups. Also, add ‘freelance writer’ in the bios section of all your social media profiles so as to widen your network and bag new clients.

Start your own blog

Your blog will be your selling point. If you include your blog link while pitching to potential clients, there is a higher chance that they will get back to you with a positive answer. If a client perusing the internet for good writers happens to chance on your blog and likes your work, he will waste no time in getting in touch with you. It also gives clients an insight into the kind of work you're interested in and the amount of articles you can generate in a given amount of time.

Develop and hone these top five skills and your freelance writing career is sure to take off like never before. Concentrate on building a solid network, and if you play your cards right, you'll earn more than people who are doing the same job full-time.
