Sacchi Saheli, the NGO bringing menstrual awareness to Delhi's government schools
An NGO named Sacchi Saheli in Delhi is known for arranging sessions on menstrual awareness in various slums in the city. This NGO is now all geared up to implement these 'period talks' in around 70 government-run schools in the city of Delhi. Sacchi Saheli will now answer all the frequently answered questions (FAQs) about female menstruation by teenage school girls in these government schools. The NGO has come up with a campaign called 'Break the Bloody Taboo' where they regularly interact with girls.
Dr Surbhi Singh, who is leading the team from the NGO is going to come up with a set of scientific and logical answers to all the questions the girls ask in the schools. The team's primary objective is to break all the stereotypes and the myths the girls have about menstruation. A questionnaire will be given to all the girls to assess their knowledge of the subject. The team is also ready to sit with the mothers of the girls to offer them counselling about their beliefs about the process.
According to a report by NDTV, Dr Surbhi said, "Usually, lessons on menstruation are imparted to girls by their mothers who unfortunately also pass on superstition, stigma, and fear surrounding the natural bodily process. There is an urgent need to educate young girls that menstruation is no disease and they need not be ashamed of it."
These sessions have been conducted in the slums of Kondi, Laxmi Nagar, Krishna Nagar, Patparganj, Trilokpuri, Madanpur Khadar, Wazirpur, and Shakur Basti. Dr Surbhi is a gynaecologist by profession, who now works on spreading awareness about menstruation and eliminating the associated societal myths.
This is a welcome initiative by the NGO Sacchi Saheli, which is tapping into the grassroots level of education in order to bring awareness about menstruation.
