This businessman from Surat married off 251 poor girls, gave Rs 5 lakh to each bride
Nowadays, spending lakhs on weddings has almost become a norm. While the rich who can afford this take pride in such extravagance, it causes great difficulty to those with limited means. Thus, there are many social workers who organise mass weddings in various parts of the country. Recently, a Gujarati businessman from Surat, Mahesh Savani, undertook the responsibility of marrying off 251 poor girls.
Mahesh, who has a diamond business, decided to take the entire financial responsibility of this mass wedding. He has been organising such weddings for poor girls since 2012 and considers this deed to be god's blessing. He has taken up the financial responsibility of around 500 poor and orphan girls, and also gets them married when they grow up.
At the mass wedding, Mahesh performed all the customs and rituals of a father. The wedding took place at Savani Chaityna Vidya Sankool in Mota Varachha, Surat, and was attended by many social workers and saints.
Of the 251 girls he married off, there was a Christian bride along with five Muslim brides who were married as per their respective customs and rituals. There was one who was disabled, and two were suffering from the HIV infection.
In the past, Mahesh has gifted the brides sofa, bed, jewelries, and Rs 5 lakh in cash to ensure they start their new life smoothly. This time, the girls had the opportunity to chose from jewelries, household items, and furniture.
Mahesh has always made headlines for his social work. He has personally organised the wedding of 900 girls since 2012. Before that, he had provided financial help to facilitate the marriage of another 1,300 girls. Mahesh has also made news for his decision to sponsor the education of martyred soldiers’ children.
