Meet the Bihari doctor who won an election in Russia and will join Vladimir Putin's cabinet
Abhay Singh Kumar, who hails from Bihar's Patna and studied medicine in Russia, has won the Assembly election from Russia's Kursk.
In the early 1990s when Abhay Kumar Singh returned from Kursk State Medical University, he never dreamt of joining Russian politics. But today, nearly two decades later, he has won a provincial election on a United Russia party ticket. A part of the Vladimir Putin side for only three years, Abhay's achievement is being lauded across social media.
Hailing from Bihar's Patna region, Abhay will join Putin's team, which has an 18-year-old long legacy. Very recently the party walked out with more than three-fourth seats in the federal assembly. Over the last few years, Abhay became the deputat of Kursk city assembly. An alumnus of Patna's Loyola High School, he returned to India after pursuing medicine but eventually chose to join the pharmaceutical business in Kursk.
Abhay also owns the Uralskiy Trade Centre, a mall located in Kursk. In a conversation with Sunday Guardian Live, he said,
My father passed away when I was just 13 years old. At that time only, I had decided to become a doctor. Hence, I came here. After graduating from the Kursk State Medical University, I went back to Patna to practise as a registered doctor there. But I came back here after sometime and entered the pharmaceutical business. However, gradually, I entered politics.
He added that he follows the work of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar In India, said India Today. Speaking about the India-Russia relationship, he said,
I want that relations between India and Russia always stay warm as they have been. Everyone here still remembers the popular slogan ‘Hindi Russi Bhai Bhai’. That is the spirit that should govern our relations.
Kursk holds a prominent place in world history as it bore witness to World War II in 1943. With an Indian holding an important position here, we hope this will boost the relationship between the two countries.
