The journey of a champion – be it an entrepreneur or an employee – is similar. It’s all about getting to the top and staying there! The most significant awareness that a champion, or a potential champion, must have is, “What will get you there, is not enough to keep you there!” Metaphorically, think about climbing a peak. You need different skills, knowledge, and attitude to reach the peak, and once you reach the top, to stay there you need to be equipped differently. The climatic conditions of the peak are very different, right? So let us try and understand what will take us there and what will keep us there – the essential skills used by the top 1 percent of entrepreneurs:
A common saying is that “well begun is half done”. If you ensure you have the right mindset and vision from the very start of your entrepreneurial journey, getting to the top will be a lot easier. Here are some key things to keep in mind that will make your trip to the top a lot smoother and easier:
A very strong burning desire to be at the top is the first quality. The journey of reaching the top always has ups and downs; in short, temporary failures are a part of the journey ‘to the top’! In the absence of a burning desire to the reach the top, you will succumb to the temporary failures and become a victim to the ‘play safe’ mentality.
If ‘desire’ is the attribute of the conscious mind, then ‘belief’ is the attribute of the subconscious. Look at your belief to build the foundation of all your desires. With a weak foundation, it is just not possible to reach the heights of your desires! Having a strong belief in yourself and the possibilities of reaching the top is of paramount importance.
While gunning for the top, temporary failures can demotivate you. Inspirational support can really do wonders in such times. There are enough people in this world who have made it to the top – being in touch with them, reading and introspecting over their strategies, and getting inspired by their stories will bring in the required push. It might also act as a catalyst when required.
Always remember, people around you have the highest impact on your journey. People who love you and who hate you both can have an adverse impact. People who love you can stop you as they don’t want you to take risks, and people who hate you can spread negativity out of jealousy. Consciously be in touch and spend time with optimistic people and professional coaches and mentors if required. Handle the negative and keep connecting more with the positive.
It is an undeniable truth that in the journey to the top, failures are guaranteed. Your conclusions from these failures are crucial as they will either stop you or make you stronger. Yes, failures can make you stronger and help you reach the top ‘faster’ if you learn from them and immediately formulate new learnings and strategies. Spend some considerable time introspecting with yourself or your coach and extract the best from your temporary failures.
Once you reach the top, your energy and motivation usually skyrocket! Now there are different skill sets and awareness required to stay at the top and continue your journey of rising:
Reaching the top never means the end of learning, but in fact is the beginning of new learning. This attitude of continuous learning is important for staying at the top and ensuring that overconfidence doesn’t become the reason for a setback!
Start looking at other champions not as competitors, but as sources of inspiration and even as possibilities for collaboration. Collaboration is key to reaching greater heights after a level. When multiple successful minds work together, new possibilities emerge!
Arrogance after reaching the top is a sure shot way of ensuring your stay there is temporary! Being humble when you are at the top and keeping the learning attitude active is not a common quality, but definitely practised by the top 1 percent of champions.
Staying at the top requires champions to now look at the ‘bigger picture’. Your vision must now transform. Let the focus move towards contributing, adding value, and creating more champions. Although the focus might seem to shift from the ‘need to stay at the top’ to contributing and changing lives of others, this approach is a sure shot guarantee of staying at the top, rising further, and becoming an inspiration for many.
With this approach, you will leave a legacy behind. Your work will continue to be remembered, even long after you’re gone.
