The announcement came through a tweet by UNICEF-India on Children’s Day, November 14:

"Meet our Youth Ambassador, Hima Das! The Asian Games medallist is @UNICEF India's first ever youth ambassador as part of #WorldChildrensDay celebration. #GoBlue."

Replying to the tweet, Hima said,

“I’m honoured and grateful to be the first @UNICEFIndia Youth Ambassador. I look forward to encouraging and supporting children to achieve their dreams. Join me and #GoBlue this #ChildrensDay.”

Hima, often referred to as ‘Dhing Express’, will now amplify the voices of children and young active participants in decision making, and will also work in creating awareness about their rights and needs, reports Business Today.

Laura Siegrist Fouche, a representative of UNICEF-India said,

“Young people are effective champions for the issues which impact them most. Hima is a young athlete, and she can inspire millions of young people to realise their dreams and aspirations. By appointing her as our first ever Youth Ambassador, we aim to leverage her potential in galvanising children and adolescents to bring about positive change.”

Hima, who hails from Nagaon district in Assam, clinched a gold medal in Women’s 4x400m relay race at the Asian Games 2018. She also won a silver in just 50.59 seconds in women’s 400m race.

She was also inducted as a Grade A officer with the Indian Oil Corporation and was among 20 sportsperson recommended for the Arjuna Award, reports The News Minute.
