Say goodbye to bathroom woes on trains - Indian Railways launches e-toilet initiative
The electronic toilets will be initially installed in a coach in the LTT-Coimbatore Express to monitor its performance in comparison with existing toilets.
Imagine a toilet pan that can sense when you open the toilet door and automatically flushes to give you a clean toilet every time. Now, imagine this on a train. That’s right! The Indian Railways introduced electronically operated toilets or ‘e-toilets’ as a special initiative to mark World Toilet Day. This is the first time that a railway coach will be integrated with these.
E-toilets come with several functions and sensors which enable pressurised flushing that is simple to operate, and also has additional functions, system integrations and sensors. But, until now, they were used only in static locations. For the first time ever, the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) Depot, Mumbai Division of the Central Railways will install these in coach (3A) of Train 11013 or the LTT -Coimbatore Express.
These will be monitored in terms of performance and customer feedback, to be able to map the differences with existing toilets, reports Financial Express.
The pans are integrated with sensors for automated cleaning. The floor is also auto cleaned after every five usages. The pan has a concealed piping with reduced joints that will ensure an increased flow of pressure.
Additionally, the toilets have improvised ventilation systems that are compatible with existing bio-toilets. The interiors have been built using plastic recycled crib sheets that were made after hot pressing empty tetra packs and shredded plastic waste from empty toothpaste or other cosmetic tubes.
The company that developed these is Eram Scientific of Kerala. It claims that the product to be easy to install because it is made completely from pre-fabricated steel structure reports Business Today.
The Indian Railways plans to add these electronic toilets to almost 2,000 old coaches by the end of 2018.
