Naspers appoints Reliance Jio payment head as CEO of PayU India
Prior to joining PayU India, Anirban Mukherjee was serving as the Co-CEO of Reliance Payments Solution Ltd.
Naspers-owned PayU on Wednesday announced the appointment of Anirban Mukherjee as Chief Executive Officer of PayU India. Anirban will be taking over from Amrish Rau, who is moving on to a bigger global role with Naspers’ fintech practice, as its Head of financial technology partnerships and investments, said a release.
Amrish was one of the founders of CitrusPay, which was acquired by Naspers-backed PayU in 2016.
In his current role, Anirban will be reporting directly to CEO of PayU Global, Laurent Le Moal.
With two decades of experience in global payments, credit, and digital banking gained in the US, India, and broader Asia-Pacific region, Anirban will be responsible for all the operations and business lines of PayU India. In addition to this, he will identify investment opportunities to build out Naspers’ fintech ambitions, helping the company scale by leveraging existing assets and infrastructure. Anirban will also lead PayU into new fintech product categories that are aligned with PayU’s global strategy, such as remittances and credit.

Prior to this, Anirban was part of the leadership team at Jio, where he drove payments, merchant services, and digital financial services, and served as the Co-CEO of Reliance Payments Solution Ltd.

Before joining Jio, Anirban worked with Standard Chartered Bank in India and APAC, and worked with CapitalOne as a senior executive leader in the US. He holds an MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and is an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur.
PayU India claims that its payment gateway processes over Rs 10,000 crore of digital payments in India monthly. Further, its payment service provider, PayUBiz, has partnered with the likes of Amazon, Ola Cabs, and BookMyShow among others.
PayU’s offerings are presently used by over 4,00,000+ merchants across India.
