SpaceX is reportedly spending more than $2.8 billion on natural gas turbines to support the growing infrastructure behind Grok AI, showing how energy has become one of the biggest pressure points in the global AI boom.
The investment is connected to powering xAI’s expanding data centre operations, including facilities linked to the Colossus supercomputer in Memphis, Tennessee, and Southaven, Mississippi. Grok, the AI chatbot developed by xAI, relies on these massive compute clusters to train and run increasingly advanced AI models.
AI’s real bottleneck is now electricity
For years, the AI industry focused heavily on chips and computing power. Companies raced to secure GPUs, particularly from NVIDIA, to train larger and more capable models. Now, another challenge is becoming impossible to ignore: power consumption.
Modern AI systems require enormous amounts of electricity to train and operate. Large data centres filled with thousands of GPUs consume energy at a scale that many existing power grids struggle to support.
Reports suggest one of the agreements tied to the turbine purchases is worth around $805 million through 2029, while another proposed deal could push the total investment close to $2 billion more. Together, the spending could exceed $2.8 billion over the coming years.
The Colossus supercomputer infrastructure alone reportedly requires around 1 gigawatt of power. That is roughly enough electricity to supply hundreds of thousands of homes.
Why SpaceX is turning to gas turbines
One major problem for AI companies is speed. Building new utility-scale energy infrastructure or expanding public electricity grids can take years. AI companies, meanwhile, are trying to scale data centres as quickly as possible.
Gas turbines provide a faster alternative. These systems can generate electricity on-site and reduce dependence on local power grids. For companies building hyperscale AI facilities, that flexibility can be critical. However, the move has also triggered criticism.
Environmental groups and regulators have raised concerns over emissions, air quality, and permitting issues linked to turbine deployments near xAI facilities. The situation reflects a growing contradiction across the AI industry. Many technology firms publicly support sustainability goals, yet the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure is significantly increasing electricity demand and fossil fuel usage.
Grok’s infrastructure ambitions are growing rapidly
The spending also reveals how aggressively Elon Musk is scaling AI operations across his companies. Grok has become increasingly integrated into X, formerly known as Twitter, while xAI continues expanding its training infrastructure. Reports suggest the Colossus facilities are designed to support massive AI workloads across Musk’s broader ecosystem.
The AI industry itself is also changing. Companies are no longer competing only through software or algorithms. They are competing through physical infrastructure, electricity access, cooling systems, and computing capacity.
