Bengaluru, Karnataka based The Akshaya Patra Foundation addresses two of the most immediate challenges facing India - hunger, and education among children. It implements the Mid-Day Meal Programme reaching over 1.8 million children across 12 States and 2 Union Territories of India. It currently operates in 55 locations that cater to 19,039 Govt and Govt. aided schools. across India. Akshaya Patra is the world's largest NGO-run mid-day meal programme. A Public-Private Partnership, Akshaya Patra combines good management, innovative technology, and smart engineering to deliver school lunch at a fraction of the cost of similar programmes in other parts of the world. For many of the children, this is their only complete meal for the day. This meal acts as an incentive for both the parents and the children. It encourages the parents to send their children to school and motivates the child to stay in school. In the process, the child gets the necessary nutrients they need to develop their cognitive abilities to focus on learning. Their partnership with the Government of India and various State Governments, along with the persistent support from corporates, individual donors, and well-wishers have helped us to grow from serving just 1,500 children in 5 schools in 2000 to serving 1.8 million children. During the COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent lockdown, Akshaya Patra answered the call to action by distributing freshly cooked food and ration kits to low-income families and marginalized communities across India. So far, The Foundation has served over 11 crore meals as part of the relief service.
