World Milk Day: These witty ads of the Amul Butter Girl have won our hearts

Utterly Butterly Delicious — Amul!

We all have grown up listening to this warm melody, and the little girl in the polka-dotted frock evokes many nostalgic memories for us, even to this day.

However, the Amul Butter Girl had not always been around. She was born in 1966 when Sylvester daCunha created her for Amul's campaign. Since then, the company's advertisements have changed for good.

For over 55 years, the chubby little girl has become a part of the mainstream conversation. While we may have laugh or two upon seeing the witty ads, they revolve around and highlight various issues — be it of national or international importance.

From caricaturing politics, cricket, the music industry, journalists, major events, and more — the unapologetic Butter Girl has won a special place in our hearts.

Amul—the “Taste of India” as its tagline suggests — is one of the most successful companies launched in 1946 that started as Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Limited in Anand. The Amul Butter Girl was created as a rival to the Polson Butter Girl of Polson Dairy of Anand, Gujarat.

Amul is not just a brand; it also represents a movement for farmers’ economic freedom. A household name, the chubby-cheeked Amul girl is here to stay.
