Dr. Subrahmanyam Karuturi, a passionate Physician with a genuine interest in technology, started Indian Patients Foundation after he finished his MD. He is presently working as Assistant Professor of Medicine, Dr. Pinnamaneni Siddhartha Institute of Medical Sciences, Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh.
“I have a special interest in information technology. Web designing is my hobby. In my medical school life, I got fascinated by computers and the internet which made me a part of this Medical Web 2.0 World. I want to leave my foot print on the MedicalWeb 2.0 World and so I constantly think of new ideas which can add value to this world. I want to make this world a better place than when I came into it,” says Dr Karuturi, sharing his thoughts on the amalgamation of the two fields.
He states that Medicine is described both as an art and a science and in future, medicine will be described as a combination of art, science and technology. Web 2.0 will be inseparable from Medicine in the coming decades. He professes that the world shall witness new technology innovations in the coming future that will change the foundations of the healthcare industry.
“Just imagine a group of monkeys. Monkeys can learn only from their parents and other group members. They can’t learn from other monkeys on another hill or another side of the world. They have to devise their own method of peeling a banana every generation. Patients using tools like Indian Patient Foundation can communicate, share and learn health knowledge by interacting with patients from all over India and rest of the world. Thanks to Web 2.0 technologies for making this happen,” says Dr Karuturi on starting up on the internet.
Indians being a bit shy in nature may refrain from discussing their personal issues online. To address this issue, IPF encourages the users to use nick names instead of real names on the website so that they can discuss their health problems without any shyness.“Dealing with a disease is often difficult. Connecting with others who are going through the same thing can make a world of difference. We help you to make those connections. In future, Indian Patient Foundation will be a place where lakhs of people will meet every day to discuss their feelings, questions and hopes with likeminded friends,” says Dr Karuturi.
Dr Karuturi is planning to launch native iOS and Android apps too. As of now the website can be accessed through all platforms.
