Traditional, modern and futuristic lighting come together in a spectacular blend at the Gardens by the Bay near the iconic Marina Bay Sands Resort in Singapore, for the Mid Autumn Festival. The skyline is punctuated by the towering ‘super-trees,’ brightly lit up at night and bathed in ambient sound, and the Lantern Festival features a range of exhibits from over a dozen nations around the world including China, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, India, Italy, Spain, Australia and South Africa. Some lanterns are as big as boats, and others are made from recycled egg packaging materials and even from badminton shuttlecock boxes! The displays elsewhere in Chinatown and at The Esplanade feature winners of student competitions for lantern paintings, and even poems about lanterns – a true celebration of professional and children’s art in lantern design.
The lanterns are best viewed at twilight, with different perspectives emerging as the lighting shifts from daylight to sunset to deep night. For thousands of years, lanterns have been a delight to behold with the interplay between external and internal lighting, and are a great source of learning about perspective. And that sense of perspective is something that entrepreneurs and innovators need to cultivate on a regular basis: seeing problems and products from their own eyes as well as the eyes of their customers, partners, competitors and investors.
What light does your product throw on your market? How well does your empathy and perspective guide you to the lights of success?
